Why, hello there, from your always loyal friends at Spirit Bay!
The last time we hit the Net with our Northland musings, we were waxing poetic about spring. Well, spring has finally given way to...can you guess it...here it comes...SUMMER!
Well, maybe you don't think about summer in ALL CAPS in the same way we do. Maybe you're a fan of frostier temps and chillier climates. In that case, well, all we can say is wait until they come rollin' in again. But in the meantime, let's embrace the variety that trademarks the Great North and frolic in the exciting possibilities of summer!
Whether or not you like to be tickled by the sun's radiant rays and experience the toasty warmth (and, ehem, the biting mosquitoes) that mark every summer season, we'd all have to agree that summer unlocks a wide variety of incredible opportunities for enjoyment, adventure, and just good 'ol fashioned camaraderie. Whether it's getting outside to partake in yard games or going on a wild hike to enjoy the plethora of new life that summer ushers forth, there's nothing quite like summer in our minds. And as the sun, that sustainer of earthly life, continues to soak us in its beauty, please bear with us to allow us to...wait, what was that? BEAR WITH US? Well, we have a couple pics to show from a REAL LIFE BEAR that was actually WITH US just a couple weeks ago!
And how about that amazing airshow over the past weekend? Which one of us who were lucky enough to see the spectacle didn't enjoy watching the Blue Angels zoom through the skies, rattling the earth with their might? Here's a video of the show occurring right over our house! (sorry for the shaky video...we were a bit excited) 😮
But let's get back to our original point...what was it again?...oh, yes. BEAR WITH US because we have something to tell you. To add a little pep to your summer, you should...stop into Spirit Bay and check out all our new offerings!
Alright, so that was a wee bit over the top for such a trivial and self-promoting announcement. But we here at Spirit Bay have been getting ready for summer! Stop in, say hi, and take a look at some of our new offerings, such as:
Not to mention our world-class selection of beads, Native American crafts, artifacts, and other unique treasures that we have become renowned for.
So come on in, and find that one-of-a-kind fabulous Father's Day gift before it's too late. (Father’s Day is Sunday, June 18th and did we mention we carry "manly" gifts like high-quality Nebo flashlights, a wide variety of knives, stamped leather work gloves, Duluth baseball caps and other gifts that Dad just won't find anywhere else? Seriously, though, we want to thank all you fathers out there for being inspirations to your kids.)
Check out the new arrivals, or just browse around and get a reprieve from the summer climes.
Well, it's hard to experience summer while you're staring at an electronic device reading a blog post that's going on for way too long, so we'll wrap it up and leave you to all your summer wanderings!
Make it a summer to remember,
- Your friends at Spirit Bay
Well, fellow Duluthians and Northlanders, it hath finally happened. After a sultry summer and a vivid fall, our old familiar acquaintance (whether it be a welcome one or not) has ambled back into town. Yup, you guessed it: ‘Ol Man Winter has officially arrived to stay until whenever he feels it prudent to take his leave. Yes sir, that mystical time frequently referred to throughout the year, yet that which seems so distant…”when the snow flies”….has arrived.
Alright, alright, maybe some of you aren’t quite so optimistic about the commencement of another sloppy, chilly, gusty, shovel-wielding winter. (After all, “excessive early-onset-crusted-ice-snow-shoveling-sore-shoulder-syndrome” is a distinctly Minnesota malady). But going along with the theme of our previous post, we would like to spend some time contemplating gratitude. In this case, gratitude for the tedious, yet in many ways, delightful winter that has officially begun up here in America’s Icebox. Here are some of the wonderfully wintery musings that we’d like to share with you today.
Let’s face it, not many of us much enjoy the whipping winter wind. As growing drifts of snow build up on the previously green grass, Jack Frost, jogging out from an intense workout, exhales deeply, lifting up the recently settled snow, tangling it into pale, vibrant ribbons, and throwing it across the terrain, often into the unsuspecting faces of innocent snow shovelers who, perhaps, forgot to cover up their cheeks. But from the comfort of one’s home, with a peppermint mocha in hand and a pair of comfy Solmate socks fitted snugly on feet (find these wonderfully warm and fashionable socks at Spirit Bay!), watching the midair currents of misplaced flakes dancing their way around the yard bring joy and awe of the idiosyncrasies of the season to one’s heart.
If you happened to be down by the lake Friday during the height of the storm, you may have seen a spectacular show. Mr. Frost headed down to the lakeside and stirred up the stagnant depths of the world’s largest freshwater lake, causing angry, foamy waves to become churned up from the middle of the unsalted seas. Later, the waves solidify into awe-inspiring sheets of jagged icicles on the rocky shore, turning the waterfront into a glassy spectacle for the awe of all. Then, when the sun decided to show itself the next day, the whole white-dusted landscape lit up with magnanimous force, casting brilliant rainbows of radiance into our eyes and reminding us that it’s always better when it’s bright.
When the snow isn’t driving down upon our heads with fierce force, when those individually unique flakes of joy sprinkle down upon the landscape, without a doubt, the best form that they come in is snowglobe form. You know what I mean. Small handfuls of tender, tiny flakes float and twirl their way down from the heavens, in pursuit of a driveway, roof, or car windshield. Truly, when one glances out at these flakes, one cannot help but see the inherent beauty in the world which has been created for us.
Well, although there’s plenty more to discuss about this particular topic, something tells me that if we do it all now, we won’t have anything new to talk about come February…and March…and April…and HOPEFULLY not May. But even if that is the case, know that winter is not a bleak, dismal season. Like everything else in life, there is joy, hope, and encouragement to be found during this special time of year, and we hope you’ll join us here at Spirit Bay in celebrating and cherishing the winter season as it starts to roll into town!
We hope you’ve had a great weekend, drinking up the last drops of fall color, soaking up the sunshine, and enjoying the unseasonably warm weather before the frosty, refreshing tide of winter comes rolling in. Despite what the weather of this past weekend might have convinced you, it is already November! Yes, we’ve enjoyed the entirety of the essence of the bridging month of September and the delightfully vibrant, crisp month of October, and now it’s time for November. What qualities are defined by this month? Well, let’s think about something besides the weather for a moment. What good is there in confining our “thanks giving” to one day out of an entire month, when we have so many incredible blessings to be grateful for at all times? In honor of that proposition, let’s make November a month of gratitude. Of course, we should always ponder the bountiful bouquet of blessings bestowed upon our bodies and souls, but if one must take a month to, especially ponder upon what we have to be thankful for, let it be November. So, for our first post of the month, here are just a few of our reflections as we head into the season of gratitude:
Lastly, (at least for this post; there is no limit to our thankfulness outside of the tight and impersonal confines of cyberspace), we are grateful for gratefulness! In other words, we are grateful that not everything in the world feels grim and unpromising. Blessings are everywhere for everyone if we just take the time to notice. We encourage you this month, and always, to just pause, take a deep breath, glance around you, think of the positive, wonderful things in your lives, and take a moment to acknowledge how blessed you really are as the craftsmanship of an all-powerful Creator.
Thank you for being grateful with us as we celebrate the time leading up to the Thanksgiving/Christmas season.
Fall isn't done yet! Wow, what a gorgeous Fall day this past Saturday in the Northland.
We wait at the end of summer for a time when the trees change their leaves from deep green to the vivacious array of myriad colors that greet our eyes whenever the weather turns crisp. Alas, we wait...and when the colors finally do show themselves after a long summer of hiding, we have but a fleeting week (or two) to enjoy them before the October winds blow them free. With saddened hearts we watch them flutter gently in huge flurries to the ground like the clouds opened up and decided to precipitate leaves. It almost doesn't seem fair that we only get to see beautiful colors for such a short time each year. We are left with the bare exposed tree skeletons....there for the long frosty winter until the green starts to spring back in April. However, there is something noble about trees turning into such a magnificent display annually to give us such enjoyment and wonder before winter's hibernation. Our Creator has given us a mystery to behold where faith and Truth prevail. Until next Spring, dear trees: when we look forward to the new sprigs of life.
We hope you are able to get outside and enjoy all that nature has on display for us. While you're out and about, be sure to stop by Spirit Bay and say "hi," we'd love to meet you!
