Why, hello there, from your always loyal friends at Spirit Bay!
The last time we hit the Net with our Northland musings, we were waxing poetic about spring. Well, spring has finally given way to...can you guess it...here it comes...SUMMER!
Well, maybe you don't think about summer in ALL CAPS in the same way we do. Maybe you're a fan of frostier temps and chillier climates. In that case, well, all we can say is wait until they come rollin' in again. But in the meantime, let's embrace the variety that trademarks the Great North and frolic in the exciting possibilities of summer!
Whether or not you like to be tickled by the sun's radiant rays and experience the toasty warmth (and, ehem, the biting mosquitoes) that mark every summer season, we'd all have to agree that summer unlocks a wide variety of incredible opportunities for enjoyment, adventure, and just good 'ol fashioned camaraderie. Whether it's getting outside to partake in yard games or going on a wild hike to enjoy the plethora of new life that summer ushers forth, there's nothing quite like summer in our minds. And as the sun, that sustainer of earthly life, continues to soak us in its beauty, please bear with us to allow us to...wait, what was that? BEAR WITH US? Well, we have a couple pics to show from a REAL LIFE BEAR that was actually WITH US just a couple weeks ago!
And how about that amazing airshow over the past weekend? Which one of us who were lucky enough to see the spectacle didn't enjoy watching the Blue Angels zoom through the skies, rattling the earth with their might? Here's a video of the show occurring right over our house! (sorry for the shaky video...we were a bit excited) 😮
But let's get back to our original point...what was it again?...oh, yes. BEAR WITH US because we have something to tell you. To add a little pep to your summer, you should...stop into Spirit Bay and check out all our new offerings!
Alright, so that was a wee bit over the top for such a trivial and self-promoting announcement. But we here at Spirit Bay have been getting ready for summer! Stop in, say hi, and take a look at some of our new offerings, such as:
Not to mention our world-class selection of beads, Native American crafts, artifacts, and other unique treasures that we have become renowned for.
So come on in, and find that one-of-a-kind fabulous Father's Day gift before it's too late. (Father’s Day is Sunday, June 18th and did we mention we carry "manly" gifts like high-quality Nebo flashlights, a wide variety of knives, stamped leather work gloves, Duluth baseball caps and other gifts that Dad just won't find anywhere else? Seriously, though, we want to thank all you fathers out there for being inspirations to your kids.)
Check out the new arrivals, or just browse around and get a reprieve from the summer climes.
Well, it's hard to experience summer while you're staring at an electronic device reading a blog post that's going on for way too long, so we'll wrap it up and leave you to all your summer wanderings!
Make it a summer to remember,
- Your friends at Spirit Bay
Greetings once more from your sun-starved, spring-seeking, and always loyal friends at Spirit Bay!
This time of year, we can’t blame each other if we’re more than ready to hang up the heavy coats and enjoy being outdoors in the warmer weather, even for those of us winter-lovin’ Duluthians who are sad to see the torrents of melted snow cascading down the streets and feel the powerful rays of the toasty sun drip down our necks. But let’s be honest here…we live in the Northland. We’ll get back to the frigidness before you can say, “spring is here,” if that’s your jam. But for the rest of us (whether we be snowbirds or simply year-round locals who are grateful for the “balmy” above-50-degree temps), it sure is nice to be back out in the nature we love and experiencing the variety of climate we are so blessed to experience.
We have enjoyed some truly beautiful weather lately and are starting to see the peeks of tulips, daffodils, pussy willows, and other gorgeous plants along with the cacophony of chirping, flitting, and joyfully singing birds. Even they seem grateful to be back out in their favorite trees, belting out their glee like a high-pitched choir. We even have the privilege of watching a robin build his nest in an evergreen outside our window!
With the warming weather and thoughts of Spring, you’d better bet that Spirit Bay is preparing for Spring too! We’re excited to introduce some new and exciting products:
With the change of season, new birth of foliage and itty-bitty baby animals everywhere (awwwww), it reminds us of the ultimate rebirth…the one Christ provided us by His death and resurrection. May you be comforted by His assuring and inspiring promise of hope and eternal life where there is no more sorrow and no more tears
Enjoy the beauty of Easter, absorb it for all its worth, revel in its fresh and exciting promise, but most importantly…(wait for it)…stop into Spirit Bay! Alright, fine, we didn’t have to put that pitch in, but we really do want you all to have a truly excellent Easter!
‘Til next time,
-Your Friends at Spirit Bay
Well, it’s officially Spring in the Northland, and the weather is teetering back and forth as if to tease us that Spring is really here, but that’s okay! We are hardy Duluthians, and part of the grueling process of earning that rugged and admirable definition is being patient with undecisive ‘ol nature.
For the last couple of months while the trees slumbered and warmth-craving folks were packed tightly into their heat-packed houses with cabin fever (or perhaps out skiing, snowboarding, sledding, tobogganing, snowball fighting, snowman making, or Lake Superior surfing if you have a “Duluth” chromosome or two in your genome), Spirit Bay has been busy working behind the scenes! What’s the result of all this hard work? Well, we have a few fun things to share...
As many of you are aware, being “new” owners (2nd generation), we have updated our exciting vision and our look a little bit. We are a “two stores in one” concept. One is the foundation that our store was built upon, Spirit Bay Trading Company, specializing in Native American beads, arts and crafts; and the other is our up-and-coming gift shop that we are in the process of growing.
Secondly, we are also excited to finally reveal our NEW look, formulated with loving care from months of effort at the drawing board during snowy days, experimenting with colored pencils, stencils, and pastels (alright, that’s an exaggeration; modern-day technology makes everything easier):
Lastly, we want you to know that we deeply appreciate our customers and care about your needs and thoughts, and we’d love to hear from you. We welcome your input on three survey questions used through the SurveyMonkey link.
Thank you for your continued business and we look forward to a super, scintillating, SPIRIT BAY SPRING! (Seriously, do enjoy all that spring has to offer as nature changes course and a wave of refreshing, vibrant life washes over the Northland!)
Until next time,
Your Friends at Spirit Bay
Well, here we are, a week into the New Year. As the media has been flooded with images of the year, top 10 lists or the best of this and the worst of that, I think about that seemingly contradictory yet wonderfully insightful first paragraph from A Tale of Two Cities:
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us...”
2016 seemed to bring in a barrage of surreal situations in a variety of ways not unsimilar to the wise and maybe even prophetic words of Mr. Dickens. Whether the past year was the best, worst or just “meh” for you, we thought we’d share some highlights of 2016 from Spirit Bay Duluth! Not quite a top 10…it’s our top 9 (we dare to be different).
Did you know tomorrow, January 8th, is Elvis’ birthday?
In honor of Elvis, we’d like to say:
We wish we could share a nice peanut butter and banana sandwich with you (we can’t), but we do have a plethora of lovely crafts, gifts and décor items we’d be happy to show you or chat about some of the unique photographs, books or one-of-a-kind items that are showcased in our Canal Park retail store.
Stop by; we’d love to meet you!
The following are our best wishes for a…
A new year is like a blank book. The pen is in your hands. It is your chance to write a beautiful story for yourself. Happy New Year! (author unknown)
Baby, it’s cold outside!
Brrrrrr! To some people, that’s pretty much all they can think about as this frosty time of year rolls around. Decked out in three layers of fuzzy garments, nose numb with the biting wind, lungs filled with the shockingly, yet pleasantly refreshing air of Jack Frost’s domain, we, even as “hardy Minnesotans” understand if you might be feeling a tad curmudgeony as temperatures dip far below zero and we settle into our average temperatures of the winter months. However, whether you take delight in nippy climes or not, we here at Spirit Bay are encouraging you to choose JOY this month and always!
JOY is our chosen theme of the month for December, and there’s a reason: life would be pretty bland, tasteless, and melancholy without it. But instead of just sitting around talking about the merits of JOY, let’s make a conscious effort to look around for it in our everyday lives! Here are some examples:
All these are tangible, wonderful ways to see JOY all around us in all circumstances and in all places. But sometimes, the most important and impressive of JOYS is the unseen. A heartfelt Christmas story, a random act of kindness, kids of all ages belting out timeless carols and showing youthful JOY by embracing the authentic Christmas spirit, being together with family and friends…
However, sometimes the Christmas season is hard…sometimes it’s difficult on the pocketbook, the emotions, the body or spirit or whatever it may be for a variety of reasons. Is life always all rosy and wonderful? No. Life certainly isn’t the beautiful gardens of Leif Eriksson Park or the smooth expanse of Lake Superior (to borrow some Duluth examples). Will we have trials and tribulations? The answer shouldn’t come as a surprise. BUT we can choose JOY no matter our situation…it’s a choice. Be unforgiving, moping curmudgeons…or choose to revel in the JOY and peace that transcends all understanding!
God promises hope to the weary, and while tangible material things can frequently bring us joy for the moment, ultimately, every one of these tangible, material things will fade away. True JOY is knowing the Reason for our hope, love and happiness in a fallen world. True JOY is enjoying the Christmas season for what it is: a celebration of the most profound JOY you’ve ever known. True JOY is surrendering yourself to the unseen, yet so real thing that is hope and forgiveness. Christmas, in our opinion, is the best time to find all these things. While we do hope you stop in to Spirit Bay for a plethora of wonderful gift-giving ideas (there’s the pitch), our prayer is that you know the true Reason for the season…now and always!
But seriously, we really do think you’ll love the wide variety of Northwoods gifts, Native American crafts, and other unique treasures available in our Canal Park retail store, right alongside the icy lake. Stop on in and say hi! OR if the cold has you not wanting to leave the comfort of your own home, check out our ONLINE SHOP! We are continually adding to it.

Most JOYful Christmas Blessings to you,
Happy December, everyone!
Doesn’t it seem like just yesterday we were just seguing from steamy summer to crisp fall, receiving that one early Christmas catalog in your mailbox and laughing smugly at it, saying, “Yeah, sure…like I would ever look at anything Christmas-related before December!” Well, it’s December. Deal with it. Alright, that was harsh. What we really want to say is, “Happy December, fellow Northlanders!” Okay, that’ll work. Now, let’s get into some thoughts.
December is the only month where one holiday dominates the entire 31-day calendar. We slurpily sip peppermint flavored hot chocolate, sentimentally watch endearing Christmas movies, and joyfully belt out inspirational carols throughout the month to celebrate one day at the end of it. Pretty remarkable, isn’t it? Well, not when you consider the grandiosity of the event that we commit ourselves to celebrating…the birth of Joy, Life, and Hope itself. In our humble opinion, that’s something worth celebrating joyously!
To be honest, we here at Spirit Bay are major fans of Christmas. To us, there’s nothing more delightful than strolling in on a brisk Christmas Eve, thick bursts of swirling frost exploding from your nostrils, cheeks scarlet with cold, and settling into a cozy house, enjoying the vibrant lights of the season and partaking in the multifaceted euphoria that make this incredible holiday what it is. Truly, “the holiday” is just too dull of a synonym for this time of year. Let us celebrate sincerely blessings now and for every Christmastime to come.
Well, we haven’t even brushed the surface of what we have to say as we head into December, but we’re going to have to wrap it up for today so you can go wrap up your newly-bought gifts. So goodbye for now, and remember: Christmas Joy is all around. You just have to look for it and feel its tangible blessings surrounding you during the season and always.
